How to learn to speak Czech language as a beginner?

Moving to Czechia? Learn the Czech You’ll Actually Use.

Starting a new life in another country is exciting—but it can also be overwhelming when you don’t speak the local language.

In my humble opinion, you don’t have to be a language expert right away.

But knowing even just the basics will not only earn you respect from the locals, but it will also boost your own self-confidence.
From my travels around the world, I know that simply saying „thank you” to locals in their native language can work wonders.

I remember when I was in Crete, and whenever I thanked the locals in Greek—Σας ευχαριστώ (Sas efcharistó)—I could almost always see surprise on their faces. So for me, learning a language is great just for that feeling and reaction alone. Not to mention the benefits it brought me. At first, a grumpy shopkeeper would break into a smile when I spoke to him in his language, a waitress’s eyes would light up, and so on.

Imagine arriving in Prague, ordering your first meal, buying groceries, taking public transport, or visiting a pharmacy. These everyday situations can quickly become stressful if you don’t know what to say.

The good news? You don’t need to become fluent in Czech to communicate confidently.

You simply need the right words for the right situations. That’s exactly what Survival Czech was created for.

Speaking even a few Czech words can completely change your experience.

People appreciate your effort.

Simple expressions like Dobrý den, Prosím, and Děkuji immediately create a positive first impression.

There are several ways to learn the basics:

 1. On your own: Buy a textbook, watch a few tutorials, get a dictionary, etc. This is a good option if you’re determined, know how to study, don’t need motivation or feedback from anyone, and are persistent.

2. Take private lessons.

3. You have a native speaker friend who’s willing to practice with you every day. Good for authenticity. Downside: Not everyone has the patience or knows how to teach and EXPLAIN things.

4. AI. Advantage: It’s free. Downside: It’s not as authentic and sometimes says nonsense.

5. A course. Advantage: Topics put together by a professional with real-world experience guarantee usefulness, speed, and effectiveness. Plus, the instructor will push you even when you don’t feel like it. You’ll stay motivated. Disadvantage: You need to find a reputable instructor and make sure the course is worth it—not some piece of crap or a total mess from top to bottom.

Based on scientific research and my experience teaching Czech to adult non-native speakers, I have put together a basic course. Of course, I can recommend this course or any other approach you deem suitable for your needs.

I will now outline what the course I’ve created includes, so that you can incorporate these elements into your own learning or know what to expect should you ever consider using the services of Daniel Academy in…

Why Most Czech Language Courses Don’t Work

Many language courses begin with grammar rules, verb conjugations, and long vocabulary lists. While grammar is important eventually, it’s probably not what you need on your first day in Czechia.

When you’re standing in a restaurant, checking into a hotel, or asking someone for directions, you don’t need perfect grammar. You need practical communication. Survival Czech focuses on exactly that. You’ll learn useful Czech phrases that you can start using immediately—without spending months studying grammar.
